Judgement

SCREENING OF DOCUMENTS AND FOOTAGE

  1. The Nominating Committee is formed within the Organizing Committee. They will decide who is eligible to participate in the first preliminary round based upon their screening of the documents and footage materials submitted by the applicants.
  2. Each applicant will be notified of the results either via a letter or Email by August 15, 2015.
  3. Min-On will not officially announce the details of the initial screening.

JUDGING GUIDELINES

  1. The competition is divided into three parts: the first, second preliminary rounds and the finals.
  2. The schedule of the competition is outlined in the next section, "Dates, Venues and Orchestras."
  3. All three parts of the competition will be open to the public (admission concerts).

JUDGING PROCEDURES FOR REQUIRED PIECES AND COMPOSITIONS OF CHOICE

First Preliminary Round (Orchestra Conducting)

Required piece

  • Mozart: Symphony No.39 in E Flat Major, K. 543, the first movement (Bärenreiter edition)
  • Bartók: Divertimento for String Orchestra, Full Score (Boosey & Hawkes edition)

Second Preliminary Round (Orchestra Conducting)

Required pieces

  • Akira Miyoshi: Concerto for Orchestra, Full Score (Ongaku no Tomo Sha edision)
  • Liszt: Symphonic Poem "Les preludes" (Breitkopf & Härtel edition)
  • Saint-Saëns: Introduction and Rondo Capriccioso (Durand edition)

Finals (Orchestra Conducting)

Required piece

  • Brahms: Variations on a Theme by Joseph Haydn (Breitkopf & Härtel edition)

Compositions of Choice

  • The piece to be conducted will be chosen by the Organizing Committee from the three compositions of choice submitted at the time of application by the contestants while complying with the conditions that, "These pieces must be symphonic or orchestral music with no more than three players for each wind instrument and six players for percussion (including timpani), and not contain instrumental solo, a vocal solo, or a chorus."
  • Notes on the Composition:

    Up to one saxophone is acceptable. One each of piano, celesta and organ is accepted, as well as up to two players on each of these instruments. However, harpsichord is not accepted. Up to two harps are acceptable.

  • Contestants will be informed which composition(s) of choice to conduct after the announcement of the results of the second preliminary round.

Note: Order of Appearance

The order of appearance for the first, second preliminary rounds and the finals will be decided by lots drawn by each contestant.

PARTICIPATION FEE

The candidates selected for the first preliminary round based on their documents and footages are requested to pay the participation fee at the time of registration. The participation fee is 20,000 yen. (It must be paid with cash in Japanese yen.)

REGISTRATION

First Preliminary Round - Tokyo

All contestants participating in the first preliminary round must assemble at the time and place indicated below to complete the registration procedures.

Date: October 11, 2015 (Sun.)
Time: 3:00 p.m. . 5:00 p.m.
Place: Min-On Culture Center (1st Floor lobby) in Tokyo

  1. Passages for the required piece to be conducted in the first preliminary round will be announced.
  2. The competition schedules and the order of appearance will be determined by lottery and announced.
  3. Contestants must pay the participation fee.
  4. Contestants from overseas will receive a subsidy to cover the cost of international airfare.

Second Preliminary Round - Tokyo

Contestants who will participate in the second preliminary round must assemble at the time and place indicated below to complete the necessary procedures.

Date: October 13, 2015 (Tue.)
Time: Right after the announcement of the result of the first preliminary round
Place: Tokyo Opera City Concert Hall

  1. Passages for the required piece to be conducted in the second preliminary round will be announced.
  2. The competition schedules and the order of appearance will be decided by lots drawn by each contestant.

Finals - Tokyo

Contestants who will participate in the Finals must assemble at the time and place indicated below to complete the necessary procedures.

Date: October 15, 2015 (Thu.)
Time: Right after the announcement of the result of the second preliminary round
Place: Tokyo Opera City Concert Hall

  1. Passages for the Compositions of Choice to be conducted in the finals will be announced.
  2. The special notes on the rehearsal for the finals will be announced and the order of appearance will be decided by lots to be drawn by each contestant.

REGISTRATION

  • The results of the first preliminary round will be posted in the competition hall following the competition on Tuesday, October 13, 2015.
  • The results of the second preliminary round will be posted in the competition hall following the competition on Thursday, October 15, 2015.
  • The results of the finals will be announced at the Awards Presentation Ceremony following the finals on Sunday, October 18, 2015.
