The 18th Tokyo International Music Competition for Conducting in 2018

Application

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

  1. The competition is open to people of all nationalities.
  2. Applicants must be under 38 years old at the time of the Finals (October 14, 2018) of the competition.
  3. Former first-prize winners of this competition are not eligible to compete again.

APPLICATION PROCEDURES

Online Application (Recommended)

  1. Complete and submit the application form found on the website of Tokyo International Music Competition (http://www.conductingtokyo.org)
    1. Fill out your name, date of birth, sex, nationality, current address, name and address of the Company/School you belong to, phone number, email address, your mother tongue, other language(s) you speak (if any), curriculum vitae, three compositions of choice, and the recording date of the footage material containing a performance of the applicant conducting.
    2. Upload the above footage on the internet and fill out its URL on your application form.
    3. Upload the data of your ID photo taken within the last 6 months as designated.
    4. Upload either scanned or photographed legal document that proves your date of birth as designated.
  2. Falsification of any details will render the entry invalid.
  3. The entered contents will be transmitted after being encrypted by SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) and TLS (Transport Layer Security).

Application via Post

  1. Complete the attached forms and submit them together with the other required items as listed below:
    1. Application form
    2. Curriculum vitae
    3. Three compositions of choice
    4. Footage materials containing a performance of the applicant conducting, must be recorded on either a mini-digital video (mini-DV) tape, a DVCAM tape, or DVD (VCD is unacceptable). Refer to the following section, “Special Notes Regarding Application” for details. PC medium such as USB flash drive or SD memory card are also acceptable.
    5. Three ID photographs (5cm x 5cm) of the applicant in either black and white or color, taken within the last 6 months. One of these should be attached to the application form.
    6. Legal evidence of date of birth, or a copy of the legal document is also acceptable.
  2. Falsification of any details will render the entry invalid.

SPECIAL NOTES REGARDING APPLICATION

  1. Curriculum Vitae
    Provide your CV mentioning academic background, names of main teachers whom you studied under, awards and present professional status, competitions you have participated in, etc. within the space provided in the digital application form or the regular form.
  2. Three Compositions of Choice
    1. Please refer to the section "Judging Procedures for Required Pieces and Compositions of Choice."
    2. Applicants must submit three compositions of choice he/she wishes to conduct at the finals in accordance with the following conditions: These pieces must be symphonic or orchestral music with no more than three players for each wind instrument and six players for percussion, and not contain instrumental solo, a vocal solo, or a chorus.
    3. These pieces should not overlap with the required pieces specified in the “Judging Procedures for Required Pieces and Pieces of Choice” for the first and second preliminary rounds and the finals.
    4. For these three pieces, state both the original title and the English title (for Japanese applicants, state the Japanese title), the name of the composer, the opus number and the edition name.
  3. Footage material
    1. The following piece must be recorded.
      Mozart: Overture for Opera “Magic Flute” (Any edition is acceptable)
    2. The footage should contain a performance of the applicant conducting. Both the conductor and the musicians playing should be framed together in the footage. Footage with the conductor being filmed from among the musicians is desirable.
    3. When applying online, the recorded footage must be uploaded on the internet. Please do not use a media or email to send the footage. When using a public video posting website, set the footage as “Unlisted” or in a form that cannot be shown to the public. Acceptable file uploads are MPEG-2, MOV, AVI, MP4 or AVCHD.
    4. When sending the footage via post, send a mini-digital video (mini-DV) tape, a DVCAM tape, or a DVD disc. (VCD is unacceptable.) PC medium such as USB flash drive or SD memory card are also acceptable.
    5. State the date recorded in the designated application form. However, it must be a footage recorded after January 1, 2013.
    6. The formation may be any of the following:
      1) Symphony orchestras
      2) Chamber orchestra
      3) Ensemble
      4) Two or more pianos
    7. Min-On will guarantee that this footage material is only for the use in the initial screening of documents and footages, and will not be used for any other purposes.
    8. It is the responsibility of the applicant to make prior arrangements in the areas of copyright, portrayal or performance fees if any.
    9. Please note that the submitted footage material will not be returned.

APPLICATION PERIOD

  1. Applications must be submitted between 12a.m., January 31, 2018 and 11:59p.m., May 2, 2018 (Japan time)
  2. If applicants wish to submit the application in person to the Competition Office in Shinanomachi, Shinjuku-ku, Tokyo, they may do so between 10:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., excluding Saturdays, Sundays and Japanese national holidays.
  3. Applications by post must reach the Competition Office by May 2, 2018 (the closing date for entries) to be valid.
